January 2012
Welcome Back! We hope you had a nice holiday break. We have a lot of new students starting in January, so we hope that all our current students will make you feel welcome! Please check our website for information on our philosophy, schedule, teachers’ bios, and policies. www.canyondance.org
We will be accepting new students during January. Many classes are full, but there are still a few spots in some of the classes. Call the studio if you’re interested in adding a class. 774-3937
*Bring a friend to dance week is January 16-21. One lesson FREE for your friends to see if they'd like to join. Get a coupon from your teachers.
Parent’s Week!
Come join and/or watch your students in class the week of January 30-February 4th and see what they’ve been up to!
Upcoming events:
*Velocity Auditions on January 12th at 7:30 pm. $15 audition fee
Celebrate Youth Day at the Mall January 28th!
The
theme
for the month of January is "Spacial awareness."
This
continues
the study of space on the floor, space around our body, and
the
space you occupy as a dancer.
The studio does NOT take most of the legal holidays off. We will have class on MLK and President’s day. We WILL be closed for Spring Break the week of March 12-17.
Snow Day Note: We do not usually cancel on snow days. The weather changes so quickly here that often, by the afternoon, it is clear and sunny. Please use your own judgment when deciding to come to class when the weather is bad. If we do cancel, we try to call the students in advance.
Keep your e-mail updated with us so you receive notices and newsletters.
*Canyon Dance Supply has a Clearance sale! Many items in the store are ON SALE through January. See the store for details. Hours by appointment. 774-3937
Studio Spring Performance!
The theme for the Spring show is still under advisement by the teachers. We will let you know as soon as it is confirmed. Costume deposits of $25 are due by Feb. 1st. Feel free to include them with your February tuition. Your child will be measured in class for sizing. The balance of the payment for costumes will be due in March. We expect the total cost to be $30-$70/dance. Payment of your deposit insures that your dancer will be in the show. The date for the big annual performance is tentatively June 9th at the CHS auditorium. The mandatory dress rehearsal is scheduled for Saturday morning of the show. We will still do two shows, with younger children in just one or the other show. The performance fee and June tuition will be calculated for each class and announced later. The show includes free tickets for the dancers’ immediate family (parents and siblings only). Additional tickets will be $5/adults, $3/children. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit our scholarship fund. We will do PHOTOS in May as well. More info to follow.
Lost and Found will be given to charity on Jan. 21. Please check to see if you left any items at the studio.
Policy Prompt – a monthly reminder of school policies.
9. Dress

Support our Scholarship program.
THANK YOU for supporting the scholarship program. Our program ensures that every child should have the chance to dance. We currently have about 10% of our students on scholarship. If you would like to contribute, please do so – either add a little to your regular tuition checks, or make a separate tax-deductible donation. Confidential applications are available from your instructor.
Canyon Dance Academy and Canyon Movement Company are now the same entity. That means that CDA is part of a non-profit dance company! This provides many benefits for you as a student at CDA. Velocity Dance Company will be working more closely with CMC dancers and teachers in a mentoring program. Donations for scholarships and other gifts will be tax-deductible. More continuity and unified goals and mission with both groups. And the studio is part of the formal CMC education program. If you'd like to get more involved, please let me know. You could serve on the board of directors, a committee for an event, or volunteer in other ways.
Easy ways to help our non-profit dance school:
Please tell a friend about Canyon Dance Academy.
Please consider donating your used ink cartridges so we can get office supplies. Just leave them in a bag in the office.
Please consider a donation to our scholarship fund.
We would love an air conditioner.
We need a new shed. The roof caved with all the snow last year. If you have one or want to donate funds to buy a new one, please let us know.
Please tell a friend about Canyon Dance Academy.
Have you considered buying a supporting membership to Canyon Movement Company, the adult professional dance company?
It is a 501-c-3 non-profit company that depends on donations and grants to survive. It is the company that actually produces the Nutcracker for Canyon Dance Academy students to participate in. Annual memberships of $50 and above include a fantastic membership card that gives you discounts to many places in town including Canyon Dance Academy (free Nut dvd), Canyon Dance Supply (15% one item every time you buy), and more. For more information contact Miss Gina or check CMC’s website, www.canyonmovementcompany.org
PLEASE NOTE THE Curriculum for the studio: Canyon Dance Academy curriculum is based on a 10 month plan (with an additional summer session offered). We build each month’s lesson plans on the previous lessons, so it is extremely beneficial for your dancer to be in class as much as possible. Our curriculum is based on other successful programs including the University of Utah’s children’s dance program and programs in San Francisco, Omaha, and Arizona. Our teachers are college trained and/or have extensive professional experience both teaching and performing. Dancers who advance into Velocity Dance Company and leading roles in other productions have been excelling in our methods of teaching and are thus developing into strong, expressive dancers. If you have questions about what and why we teach, please talk to Miss Gina or check the website: www.canyondance.org
